The Inov8 Trailroc 245 are by the far the best shoes I’ve ever had. Until I put these on I had no ideas shoes could be like this. They felt great, they were incredibly light, extremely breathable because of the mesh (and therefore didn’t smell bad), fast drying and incredibly durable.
The most remarkable for me was perhaps the sole. No matter where I stepped I always felt an amazing grip. I was totally confident that I wouldn’t slide even when there was sand and dirt on top of the rocks and even when it was wet and slippery and I only landed on the ball of the foot. I never had to worry about slipping.
I bought the Inov8 Trailroc 245 before my first trip and walked the entire Camino de Santiago in these. I then traveled Africa for 5 months and climbed Kilimanjaro in them. I continued my trip in the Middle East and Asia and used these shoes for all hikes I did. After I came back home I used them as my every day shoes. They were starting to show wear but still felt great and performed flawlessly. When I left again to do the Camino de Santiago a second time I had actually ordered a new pair for the trip. But they didn’t arrive in time so I did the entire trek again in the same pair of shoes. They survived more than 2000 km/1200 mi. They were not cheap at the time I purchased them, but the price has gone down significantly since. They have a great selection of colors too.
I didn’t use the Inov8 Trailroc 245 before my first trip so I started a 900 km hike in completely new shoes which isn’t a very good idea. I didn’t get any blisters for the first week. But on the second week I started getting some. So, I recommend breaking them in before going on a hike. When I did the 100 km hike I suffered a lot of blisters, but I’m pretty sure I would have done so in any shoe at that point. On Kilimanjaro and the second Camino I didn’t get a single blister at all.
However, on the second pair I received, the rubber on the tip of the shoes didn’t stick after a while. So, I sent them back and Inov8 agreed that the shoes were faulty. They agreed to give me a replacement but unfortunately they had no Trailroc 245 left. So, I decided to get the Trailroc 255 instead. (Reviewed separately.) The customer service was good and I had no problems with getting my money back or anything. They replied to my emails and everything worked as it should.
My first pair is definitely a 10/10. If I can I will get a new pair once my current ones need to be replaced.
The second pair I would rate 6/10. The shoe itself was still as good as the first pair, in terms of fit, comfort, grip, breathability etc. But an almost new shoe should not have the tip detach.
Was I unusually lucky with the first pair or was I just unlucky with the second pair? I don’t know. If you consider buying this shoe I would suggest looking into this issue before deciding. I would personally just get it again since I’m confident in Inov8’s customer service.
